A Little About Bev

Since my own preschool days, I have always dreamt about being an early childhood educator. I have now been working in the sector for many years holding positions from teacher to director.

I eventually followed my dreams and enjoy each day working with the children in my service. My studies in this area took me from South Africa to London and finally to Australia.

I completed my first degree in early childhood education in Knightsbridge, London, where I undertook a Montessori Diploma in education 3 -5 years. Since then I have done lots more studying and completed my Bachelor of Education – Early Childhood Education (birth – 12 years) at Macquarie University, Sydney. My passion for the early years has taken me on many wonderful paths of discovery. Each day I feel so privileged to play a part in young children’s lives and to learn such amazing things as we discover the world around us together.

Early years education is continually changing as research guides our practices and pedagogies. I am passionate about assisting children to discover and explore the world and in this way ensuring they are well equipped with the necessary building blocks for future success in all they do.

I have always believed that early childhood educational plays a major impact on children’s future academic and educational paths. Children’s early years are the foundation for their future, providing a strong base for lifelong learning, learning abilities, as well as social development. Well-established research continues to emphasise the importance of early childhood education as an essential building block of a child’s future success. Children bring a wealth of knowledge with them and are generally curious about the world around them. I see my role as a facilitator, allowing young children equality, inclusion and acquisition of new knowledge and understandings, in a variety of environments.

As early childhood education continues to evolve, I believe that I need to constantly update my skills in order to be able to understand and bring the most updated practices, pedagogies and principles into the classroom with me. Clyde Street Early Learning Centre is a unique small service. The staff are all so warm, welcoming and friendly and continually go beyond their required duties. Families always comment what a warm and friendly atmosphere is felt as soon as they enter the centre. It’s always wonderful seeing our families embrace new children and families. Most of our families live in the surrounding neighbourhood and walk, scoot or ride to school each day. Due to Clyde Street being only a 27 place centre, families tend to know one another and enjoy spending time together.

In 2006 I was very fortunate to initiate a Transition to School Program in the local council I was working in. This initiative was based on research done both in Australia and overseas. Through this, I was invited by my local council to present my findings to small individual groups of educators and then finally at the 2008 Department of Education Conference at Brighton-la-Sand. This was an amazing experience and I am forever grateful for the opportunity bestowed upon me.

I believe it is very important to give back to my community and am always willing to volunteer for community programs. Over the years I have been part of school committees and each year do a special fundraiser for a ballet school.

I love ballet and used to danced for many years. I enjoy watching the Australian ballet company perform many of the classical ballets at the Sydney Opera House. I always get excited when I go. You will mostly find me in my spare time sitting in the sun reading an interesting book. I especially enjoy non-fictional stories and biographies. Another one of my favourite things to do is cook and bake. I love creating new and exciting food in my kitchen. Travel is another favourite activity and when possible enjoying travelling overseas to see my children and grandson.

I look forward to transitioning Clyde Street Early Learning Centre into the Active Kids Group, and continuing in my role, contributing to young children and their families growth and development in the North Bondi area.
