Active Kids Moore Park – Rated Exceeding National Quality Standard

On Wednesday 29th June our Moore Park childcare service had its assessment and ratings visit from the Department of Education.

We have received our results and are excited to share that our Moore Park childcare centre has been rated as EXCEEDING National Quality Standards under the National Quality Framework.

The National Quality Standard (NQS) sets a national benchmark for the quality of children’s education and daycare services across Australia.

Congratulations to our service coordinator Suzie and her amazing team! We are so proud of this result as an overall rating of Exceeding NQS is given to services that go above and beyond the requirements of the NQS.

My Senses – AKG Ermington Childcare Interests

This week at our Ermington Childcare Centre, our little learners in the Honeypots have been discovering and exploring their senses through the Creative Arts. Our little learners have had the opportunity to explore art through various learning areas including science, cultures and more.

The Honeypots continue to develop their creativity at daycare through the creative arts by extending their learning through paint, play dough activities and more. Our Honeypots began the childcare week exploring the moon through painting where children had the opportunity to use their senses e.g. touch to feel the moon that they had created. This experience further encouraged children to explore their senses and develop their fine motor skills. They also developed their knowledge of colours, built new skills and used their imaginations to enhance their childcare learning opportunities.

At Active Kids Group Childcare Ermington, our Honeypots continued to develop their emerging knowledge about our Nation’s Indigenous Australians through their arts experiences. Through using natural resources, the children developed their respect for diversity and extended their learning using sources from their natural environment. Our little learners used the colours of the Aboriginal flag to create their artwork. Furthermore, children continued to explore their senses through an Aboriginal inspired sand drawing activity. Using their hands to explore and replicate the symbols in the sand.

Through our early learning science activity, the honeypots also learnt through leaf chlorophyll art where they were able to learn about scientific factors and simultaneously participate in a hands-on experience.

Jungle Animals Project – AKG Bondi Childcare Interests

This week at our Bondi Childcare Centre, our little learners in the Honeypots Room have continued their learning journey about jungle animals. To begin another wonderful week at daycare, the Honeypots explored their senses through an animal themed play dough experience in their animal jungle. Through these experiences children continue learning about jungle animals and their lives through sensory play.

At our childcare centre in Bondi, The Honeypots were able to explore their creativity through creating their own jungle animal crafts. The Honeypots painted the giraffe using visual images that they had observed prior to engaging in this particular task.

The Honeypots also combined their learning interest to celebrate National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s day by exploring the story titled ‘The Biggest Frog In Australia’. Through this story the children learnt about the animal, ‘the big red frog’, ending another wonderful week of learning about animals.

What the Honeypots learnt this week at daycare through their interest:

* Opportunities for Imaginative Play

* Opportunities to explore their five senses through play

* Opportunities to develop their fine motor skills and hand eye coordination skills

* Opportunities to develop social skills including learning to share with others so all children could have a turn to be actively engaged.

Next week at our Bondi Childcare (week beginning 8th August) the Honeypots will continue:

* We will create a jungle sensory box with jungle animals.

* Group time experiences reading stories about jungle animals.

* Making a Rainbow snake

* Celebrating World Elephant Day

Educator Wellness Program at Thumbelina Edgecliff

At our Thumbelina Edgecliff childcare centre we have introduced an Educators’ Wellness Program, where educators set up some activities that support the wellbeing of our educators. Once a month, each day care room team take turns setting up a self-care activity for the rest of the educators, expressing their gratitude towards their team. We have decided to focus on a wellness program and ensure it is an integral part of our child care educators’ career at Thumbelina, as in our everyday lives, we are faced with innumerable challenges. Self-care assists educators in preventing burnout, the ability to interact more effectively with children, and creates an environment more conducive to learning at our Active Kids Group child care centre.

This month, the nursery team prepared a little teacher’s survival kit for the rest of the team. It contains hand cream to help those working hands, lozenges to support immune system, fight off those germs and help with those sore throats. Hot chocolate to make these rainy days better and chocolate because chocolate makes everything better.

Additionally, a part of Educator’s Wellness Program we also implement Be You in our service.

Be You is the national mental health in education initiative delivered by Beyond Blue, in collaboration with Early Childhood Australia and Headspace. Be You supports educators from early learning services to develop a positive, inclusive, and resilient learning community where every child, young person, educator, and family can achieve their best possible mental health. Miss Lydia who is our Be you Action team leader thought of adding a sweet gesture in our office where all the educators can add a special note to each other’s bucket to make them feel heard and appreciated. She also set up a beautiful morning tea for our lovely educators.

What Our Parents Say About Thumbelina!

Thumbelina is a child care centre in Edgecliff that has been educating children under Active Kids Group since 2010. Parents can expect to find only the highest quality equipment and facilities awaiting their children. Nestled in a quiet leafy neighbourhood in Edgecliff, our child care centre is located a short walking distance away from Edgecliff station and 5 ways in Paddington.

Parents love being a part of our centre and regularly express their gratitude through thoughtful letters. Take a long at a lovely letter we received recently from one our departing students:

“From day one Archie loved his time with your child care centres in Sydney. Watching your child grow and flourish, full or learning, curiosity and empathy is as wonderful as it is relieving… when we say you have changed a life for the better, that counts for three people.

As Covid started, Thumbelina day care remained resolute and steadfast. Always well planned, always calm, always with a laser focus on providing an environment for the kids, that made whatever was going on in the community almost melt away.

Thank you to Miss Rashi and Miss Nicole. It is the curse of what you do, that the little ones may never truly know the debt of gratitude they owe you. An oversight purely because they are so young, but the seeds you have planted at child care, will without a doubt, grow into wonderful specimens in the years to come.

Thank you all – for letting them grow, be curious, be cocky, be wrong, be upset, be frustrated and be confident at their child care centre. Thank you for the endless day care activities – always stretching their minds and challenging their comfort zones. Thank you for starting to show them the wonder of their world out there beyond their homes.”

Attending child care at Active Kids Group for the first time is an exciting experience. We want you and your child to feel settled at daycare right from the beginning, so here are some tips on creating a smooth transition for your little one!

  1. Pack all of their sleep essentials from home to take to the child care centre – Dummy, Blanket, Comforters etc
  2. Communicate with educators at the day care about your child’s normal meal and rest times
  3. Speak to your child about what will happen and be positive about their transition to child care
  4. Spend one on one time with your child after day care without distractions e.g. go to the park together
  5. Help your child reset from a long day of fun and early learning by bathing/showering them before dinner
  6. An early bed time can help curb overtiredness and prepare them for the next day at their Active Kids Child Care Centre in Sydney
