Here at Active Kids Newtown, we are committed to working with you to provide the ideal early learning curriculum and learning environment for your child. Our centre has been rated Exceeding the National Quality Standard in June 2017. Our devoted, qualified Early Childhood professionals aim to provide a safe, warm and welcoming environment, full of stimulating experiences and discoveries for our children. Our centre is open 52 weeks per year. Security The safety of our children is of paramount importance for us. We have CCTV cameras covering the car park and all learning areas, including our outdoor learning space 24/7. The front entrance is secured by an electronic security system meaning that only parents and authorised caregivers can access the building. We also have onsite parking for drop offs and pickups and have a designated area for pram storage. Educational Program Our educational program is based on the Early Years Learning Framework and is tailored to meet the needs and interests of each and every single child. The educators work in partnership with families and allied health professionals to set goals for every child. Our play-based program focuses on using the children’s interest and strengths to scaffold on their learning. At Active Kids Newtown, we believe that school readiness starts from the nursery. Play based early education provides opportunities to continuously cultivate the social skills to enter and exit play and to create and maintain friendships. To successfully navigate life at school, children need to be confident in managing small conflicts, asking questions and seeking support from a trusted adult. In our Early Childhood Education program, children have the opportunity to work both independently and in small groups, exploring their interests and learning through play. At Active Kids Newtown, we also currently have the ELLA program running in the preschool room, which is an app based program teaching language and the awareness of other cultures and languages. Our Learn and Grow team offer extra-curricular classes including Dance & Drama, Fitness and Language classes once a week on alternate days of the week each term. Staff Professional Development Here at Active Kids Newtown, we aim to open the door to the wonder and excitement of learning, discovering, exploring with peers and being guided by an educated professional. A key part of our continuous improvement is that we are continually empowering our educators to build on their knowledge and skills through our in-house monthly professional development and training opportunities. Age Groups Our age groups consist of: 0 to 2 years Nursery Room 2 to 3 years Toddler Room 3 to 6 years Preschool Room Learning Environments Our centre is equipped with reverse cycle air conditioning/heating. All rooms are comfortable and receive adequate natural lighting, heat and ventilation. Contemporary theories and research informed by the Reggio Emilia approach recognise and value the environment as a ‘third teacher’. Our learning areas have thus been designed to stimulate and challenge children’s thinking and encourage independence and inclusion. Resources are displayed on shelving units to encourage self-selection and ownership of their own learning. Our natural indoor environments are equipped differently so they are interchangeable and offer further discovery. Our large outdoor learning environment offers open spaces for creative and imaginary play, sandpits, mud kitchen, chalkboards, veggie garden, compost bins and worm farms. Each room also has their own pet. Our nursery children have fish, the toddlers have a guinea pig and the pre-schoolers have a bunny. Partnership with Families and Community With families as our primary partner, we nurture a love of learning. We actively seek the participation of all families to become involved in all our events which reflect the surrounding communities and families within our centre to encourage community networking and building relationships with other families within the organisation. We aim to create a shared learning environment where families and our early childhood professionals can collaborate for better outcomes for the children and the broader community. We have a strong sense of community, donating often to local charities which assist those less fortunate, such as Food Bank and Gift for Good. We also hold fundraising events to support numerous causes such as The Bandaged Bear Appeal, The Big Red BBQ and The Pink Ribbon Breakfast amongst others. Our pre-schoolers connect with the community and go on excursions to the local library, shops and parks twice a week. Family Feedback “Our cheeky and energetic son, Elijah, has attended Active Kids – Newtown since he was eleven months old. Now at almost four we have gotten to realise how lucky we are that such amazingly caring and talented educators are in charge of his wellbeing. Days are planned with educational yet engaging activities and Elijah is always coming home with new information which he learnt during the day. I never have to worry about his wellbeing as his educators know Elijah incredibly well and always greet him each morning with a smile. The excursions to the library and the local park have been an absolute highlight and we have all enjoyed as a family the various parties and events that Active Kids has organised to help families meet others within the community.
