A Little About Katie

I’ve been in early childhood for 4.5 years, starting out at Active Kids Group Edgecliff in 2016 as an educator in the preschool room, then moving to 2IC and eventually centre coordinator in 2019.

I love that Thumbelina has a small, community-like feel. We are located in a quiet, residential area and have a capacity of 33 children per day, which means that all of the children, families and educators are tight knit, and act as a second family to each other.

I hold a Diploma of Early Childhood Services as well as a Bachelor’s of Communications.

Over the course of my time at AKG, Thumbelina has won:

  • Outstanding Service Award (2016)
  • Outstanding Community Involvement Award (2019)

Before working in early childhood education, I worked in public relations in the sports, entertainment and consumer industry. I’ve done public relations and marketing for small brands as well as Broadway and the NBA back in Chicago.

I chose to make the switch to early childhood education in order to further enrich my life as well as to help make a difference in the lives of others. I made this decision after completing a volunteer program in which I travelled to Bali in order to teach English to children ages 5-18. This experience was extremely rewarding and inspired me to change career paths.

In my spare time, I love to read, do yoga and exercise, and spend as much time outdoors as I can! I also love to spend time with my friends and family, trying out new restaurants and of course… THE BEACH!

My personal mission at Thumbelina is to ensure that all of the children develop not only feel safe, secure and loved, but to develop a real love of learning and are inspired to be inquisitive and solve problems in their own individual ways. I don’t believe in putting children in a box. I believe that every child develops and learns in their own way, and it is our job as educators to figure out what this is, inspiring them to ask questions and develop a sense of wonder about the world around them.

My favourite childhood memories growing up always consist of playing outside. My neighbourhood friends and I would always be outside riding bikes, climbing trees, playing in the leaves in autumn and the snow in summer! I loved to be outdoors, running around and exploring!
