Childcare vs Preschool in NSW: What Parents Need to Know.

19/3/26, 1:00 am

A simple guide to childcare vs preschool in NSW, covering key differences, preschool programs, and how early learning supports school readiness.

Choosing between childcare and preschool is a common question for families in New South Wales (NSW). While the terms are often used interchangeably, they serve different purposes in a child’s early development and preparation for school.

What’s the Difference?

• Childcare (long day care) provides education and care for children from infancy to school age. It offers flexible, full-day hours and supports working families while still delivering play-based learning experiences.
• Preschool, on the other hand, is specifically designed for children aged 3–5 years and focuses on preparing them for primary school. Preschool programs emphasise early literacy, numeracy, independence, and social skills in a more structured, classroom-style environment.

Many centres, including Active Kids Group, offer both childcare and a dedicated preschool program, allowing children to transition smoothly as they grow.

Is Preschool Compulsory in NSW?

Preschool is not compulsory in NSW. However, the government recommends that children complete 600 hours of preschool in the year before starting school, as it helps build the skills and confidence needed for a successful transition to kindergarten.

How Preschool Supports School Readiness

A quality preschool program helps children develop:
• Social and emotional skills, such as sharing, cooperation, and confidence
• Early literacy and numeracy through play-based learning
• Independence, including following routines and managing belongings

These skills make starting school less overwhelming and help children adjust more quickly to classroom expectations.

Choosing the Right Option

For many families, the best option is a long day care centre that includes a preschool program. At Active Kids Group, children benefit from consistent educators, flexible care hours, and a structured preschool curriculum that aligns with the Early Years Learning Framework.

Both childcare and preschool play important roles in early childhood development. While preschool isn’t mandatory in NSW, attending a quality program can significantly support your child’s learning, confidence, and readiness for school.
